Welcome to PROHIBIT WP3

Healthcare-associated infections are adverse events in health care delivery which are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is not known which practices have been adopted by European hospitals to prevent such events and to what extent they are effective. The aim of PROHIBIT is to understand existing guidelines and practices in order to prevent healthcare-associated infections in European hospitals, to identify factors that enable and reduce compliance with best practices, and to test the effectiveness of interventions of known value. The information will be analyzed to develop recommendations for the European Union, policy makers, managers and medical professionals.

Work package 3 (WP3) will measure actual HAI prevention efforts in European countries. Among the determinants to be measured are: national infection control (IC) structures, national IC guidelines and their implementation, hospital IC structures, IC resources, IC personell workloads, IC campaigns, IC knowledge, and attitudes and beliefs toward IC and HAIs. Alcohol-based handrub consumption and bloodstream infections will be measured optionally. By assessing so many determinants, WP3 seeks to identify facilitating factors and barriers for preventing HAI at a broad level.
